A Letter to the Old Country
on America’s 250th Birthday
We’re a Mess,
But Still Worth Fighting For

Two hundred and fifty years ago, we broke up with you. It was messy. Break-ups usually are. There was shouting, property damage, and a certain amount of wasted tea and lives lost on both sides.
But here we are, two-and-a-half centuries on, and I’m writing to you from the country that walked out the door in 1776 to tell you something you may find hard to believe from where you’re sitting, the American ex.
You wouldn’t know it from the official festivities.
