Imagining the Possibilities
So the fossil fuel lobbyists got what they wanted.
There had to be some pay-off, I suppose, for 1,600 of them descending on the Brazilian city of Belém last month, determined to sabotage any attempt to include reference to fossil fuels in the final text from the COP30 climate talks.
It worked. Instead, Brazil will lead a coalition of 80 countries who within a year will produce a voluntary roadmap to phase out fossil fuels.
What this means for the COP process itself is unclear – but surely one conclusion must be to ban the fossil fuel industry from all future meetings.
