Regular observations of the political scene at home and abroad

Emperor Trump

Suetonius, who served as personal secretary to Emperor Hadrian, enjoyed privileged access to the imperial archive when he researched The Lives of the Caesars. Nevertheless, when I first read it, I concluded that his endlessly entertaining book contained more than its fair share of scurrilous gossip.

It seemed impossible that the greatest empire the world had known could have been governed by a succession of individuals as capricious, foolish, malignant, and perverted as the Roman emperors portrayed by Suetonius.

Along comes US President Donald Trump.

Suetonius records that Emperor Caligula dispatched an army to invade Britain. But when his soldiers reached the French coast, the emperor changed his mind and ordered them to collect seashells. I originally read this as satire, but now I am thinking again. Trump would have revelled in exactly this sort of decision.

Editorial – Enough is Enough

Though it may take time to fully percolate through to London and Washington, the resounding defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the Hungarian elections suggests the tide is turning after a 10-year surge of chaotic politics across Europe and the US.
