Vladimir Putin’s greatest trick was convincing the West that the Cold War ended in 1991 with a whimper and a Big Mac in Pushkin Square.

We thought we’d won.

We assumed the “end of history” meant we could settle into a comfortable nap of neoliberal expansion while the bear went into permanent hibernation.

We were dead wrong.
