Think of that moment in many horror films, when a flash of lightning reveals to the protagonists the demons that surround them.

That’s what the US Department of Justice’s release of the Epstein Files – millions of emails, files, photos, and documents related to the prolific predator and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein – felt like for those of us who have investigated, and wondered about, the sources of the political tumult across the world in the decade since the 2016 EU Referendum ejected the UK from the European Union and Donald Trump was first elected to the US presidency.

Epstein’s reputation was already dark and disturbing enough.
