Not Worth the Energy
Listening to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme is becoming bad for my health.
I recently came alarmingly close to throwing the toaster at the radio in frustration with Simon Jack’s interview with John Browne, the former CEO of BP, on drilling in the North Sea.
Browne was given nearly 10 minutes of airtime, without challenge, to laud the supposed benefits of opening more oil and gas fields. The word ‘climate’ wasn’t mentioned once.
But then so little of this debate is informed by pesky facts – for example the inconvenient truth that, as a group of scientists recently reminded us in an open letter to UK party leaders, “we have more global reserves of oil and gas than we can safely burn if we are to limit global temperature rise to below 2°C”.
