The Best Things in Life are Free

Alanna Byrne

There’s no longer any illusion: as technology rapidly advances, everything around us, both on and offline, is getting shitter. From the quality of living standards to the quality of our food, the rapid degradation of the internet and the rise of AI slop, to the state of our public infrastructure, it all seems to be going to the dregs. And fast.

There’s even a word for it. The term ‘Enshittification’ was coined by author and journalist Cory Doctorow to describe the intentional deterioration of the internet, and is now used more broadly to describe wider society and politics.

Irish podcaster Blindboy Boatclub has a similar term – ‘Skimpflation’ – to describe nostalgic products getting more expensive for less and with lower quality materials or ingredients.

‘Funnily Enough, What Matters to People is Other People’

Contrary to what big organisations in the sector say, housing is not the answer. It’s useful, but it’s not the answer.

Notes on Now – Lebanon, Lebanon

Under the ‘cover’ of the Persian assault, Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israel has invaded Lebanon and, as I write, has just carried out massive bombing raids across that small and beautiful country.
