Why AI is clever but not intelligent

One of the things that grates about the obsessive media opinionising over artificial intelligence is the general lack of knowledge about our own actual human intelligence.

Most pundits will tell you that the brain is powerful, the most complex object in the known universe, or that it has the processing power of 30,000 smartphones. But not many people have any idea how intelligence actually works.

Luckily, there is at least one man alive who does. 

Jeff Hawkins is the electrical engineer who founded Palm Computing and Handspring, and the architect behind handheld devices such as the PalmPilot and the Treo, but his real passion is the structure and function of the brain.
