The founders of the United States were very sceptical about human nature. James Madison, one of the great framers of the American constitutional system, was extremely worried about the advent of a new technology – the daily newspaper.

Madison feared newspapers were going to overwhelm the citizenry of America. Because there was too much information coming at them too fast, he feared people would react emotionally, without time for mature reflection and self-restraint. He actually thought that democracy would not survive.
