A bizarre catastrophism has gripped much of the British right in the last few months. Of course, parts of the right-wing media have always delighted in warnings that the country is on the brink of economic and societal collapse. But since the summer, the doom-mongering has spread more widely and taken on a more sinister tone.

Supposedly serious economists have started warning that the country might soon need a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.

Right-wing commentators have taken to writing, almost gleefully, that they are hoping for a bond crisis.

Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch is reportedly building much of her political strategy around the inevitability of such a crisis.
