Hacking Away
Looking like an unsellable property in an estate agents’ window – the Chelsea Football Club co-owner Todd Boehly is the latest to be shown round the Telegraph – the Abu Dhabi-backed investment fund that’s still stuck with the daily and Sunday titles reckons it’s time for a spot of financial housecleaning. Mandrake hears that it is pressing Editor Chris Evans to make about 100 journalists redundant and to clamp down on them moonlighting at other outfits such as GB News. So far, Evans has managed to resist – but it hasn’t helped his case that Lord Rothermere is in the process of letting about 100 of his own journalists go over at the Mail.
Hostile Environment
The challenges Muslims now face on the parliamentary estate – let alone in the wider community – became painfully clear at a recent gathering convened by Faith Minister Lord Khan.
“It was supposed to be a consultative meeting about the working group set up to determine guidelines on a definition of anti-Muslim hate crime and Islamophobia,” an informant tells Mandrake. “In the event, right-wingers turned out in force and it became itself a decidedly hostile environment for Muslims.”
Prominent among the peers was Catherine Meyer – just back from her suspension for referring to a senior Asian member of the House of Lords as “Lord Poppadom” – along with Claire Fox, Toby Young, Jacqueline Foster, and John Woodcock … none of them exactly known for their empathy with Muslims.
