Rachel Reeves’ commitment to her self-imposed fiscal rules appears sincere and total, even if it is economically questionable. But one cut that never seems to be contemplated is the public cash that goes to the royals.

Campaigners are calling for an urgent review of royal funding as the Sovereign Grant is increasing by a whopping 53%. This means that, in 2025-26, the cash going to the monarchy is £132,100,000 (up from £86,300,000 in 2024-25). That’s an increase of £45.8 million. For what?

April’s royal rise is happening at the same time as bills are soaring for nearly every Brit. And yet, the usual voices that froth with rage at any hint of public-sector profligacy seem rather quiet on this one …
